DHAKA, Bangladesh – Unauthorized level crossings have become a death trap in Feni district, where nine people have been killed in the last seven months due to the authorities’ negligence.

Every year, a number of people are killed in rail accidents in Bangladesh, despite trains being one of the safest modes of transportation. According to the Road Safety Foundation’s official data released in January 2022, 147 people died in 123 railway accidents in 2021.

Several investigation bodies have been formed to investigate the accident, but the authorities involved have fallen on deaf ears.

He identified Muhuriganj on the Dhaka-Chittagong rail route as a risky level crossing because no gatemen were even appointed in the six unauthorized level crossings.

In the latest incident, a former deputy general manager of Bangladesh Bank was crushed under the wheels of a train at Khilgaon level crossing in the capital on Saturday morning.
