The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has confirmed that the owners of the Chinese supermarket in Abuja, alleged to have been restricting Nigerians from access, have responded to its summons.

The FCCPC disclosed this in a post on its official X handle on Wednesday.

DiplomaticInfo had reported that FCCPC officials on Monday, shut the supermarket after workers at the store, who are mostly Nigerians, alleged that the owner, a Chinese lady, Cindy Liu Bei, had fled the premises with her family around at 8:26 a.m., as revealed by the Closed-Circuit Television Camera (CCTV).

The agency said the management of the supermarket, located within the China General Chamber of Commerce, responded to questions regarding the alleged discriminatory practices.

Giving an update on the investigation, the FCCPC said, “Update: Owners of the Abuja Chinese Supermarket facing allegations of discriminatory practices responded to our summons today to answer questions regarding the allegations.”

Noting that the FCCPC operatives have conducted an inspection of the facility, the agency assured that it will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
