MOSCOW
The Russian foreign minister on Monday said Moscow seeks to convey to all countries of the Global South and the Global East the idea that there is no alternative to a multipolar world order.
“Our task is … to strive as our main priority to achieve the formation in all countries of the Global South, the Global East, an understanding of the lack of an alternative to a multipolar world order and an understanding of the absolute need to protect the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, which ensure equality and justice in international affairs,” Sergey Lavrov said in a speech in Moscow, following a ceremony on the occasion the country’s Diplomats Day.
Russia’s duty is to do everything to fully achieve the goals of its “special military operation” in Ukraine, Lavrov said, noting that almost all of Europe has united today with the intention to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Moscow.
Recalling that Russian diplomats actively participated in meetings in preparation for the establishment of the UN during World War II, he said: “In the same way, today is no less fateful, a turning point in history, when the coalition of countries of the world majority no longer wants to live in a world where the principles of the UN Charter are not respected.”
The Russian foreign minister underlined the principles of the sovereign equality of states and non-interference in internal affairs.
Lavrov also said the task during the establishment of the UN was to approve these principles and make them a key document of international law, and that the task today is to defend this document.
“But the most important thing is to ensure that all these noble principles work. This will not be easy, the West does not want any equality, it has become accustomed to commanding and leading for more than 500 years.
“The failures and miscalculations that we have seen in the foreign policy and military adventures of the West over the past 40-50 years have taught it nothing,” he said.
“The realization is coming that this system (of the West) is unfair and does not meet the temporary interests of the overwhelming majority of the world’s peoples. And it is coming quite quickly,” Lavrov added.
He argued that Russia’s work and interaction with its partners will help the West come to the realization that there is no alternative to a multipolar world order, and the world will be “more democratic and multipolar.”
