Protests have been ongoing since October after military takeover

KHARTOUM, Sudan

Thousands of Sudanese demonstrated in the capital Khartoum on Thursday to demand full civilian rule.

The rally was called by the Resistance Committees, a protest group that led demonstrations against the military, and the Sudanese Professional Association (SPA), which spearheaded protests against former President Omar al-Bashir.

“A complete civil state”, and “Freedom, peace, and justice” were among banners carried by protesters, amid chants against the military, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter on the ground.

Demonstrators also called for bringing those responsible for the death of protesters to accountability.

Sudan’s military has shared power with civilian groups since al-Bashir’s ouster in 2019, but the situation escalated when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government on Oct. 25.

Ever since, civilian groups have launched almost daily protests against the military, amid calls for the handover of power to civilians.
