The commander of the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina, Ishaya Ibrahim, has assured the widows of slain soldiers of the Brigade’s commitment to their welfare and that of their children.
Mr Ibrahim gave the assurance when he received the widows of fallen Nigerian Army personnel who are residents at Natsinta Cantonment, Katsina, on a courtesy visit on Friday. This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday.
The commander restated that the sacrifices made by their late husbands in defence of the nation would never be forgotten, stressing that the brigade considers the well-being of their families a top priority.
The commander assured the delegation that the brigade would continue to implement measures to improve their welfare and support their children’s future, in line with the army’s commitment to honouring its fallen heroes.
He further reaffirmed the army’s resolve to stand by the families of deceased personnel, noting that their sacrifices remain a source of pride and inspiration to serving members of the force.
According to him, the visit reinforced the army’s ongoing efforts to strengthen support systems for widows and families of fallen soldiers, while promoting unity and mutual understanding with the military.
The statement explained that the visit aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the widows and the military formation, while also providing a platform for the women to formally present their welfare needs.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Hauwa Mohammed, appealed to the brigade commander to sustain and expand the ongoing welfare interventions designed to support widows and their children.
She stated that, beyond their responsibility to raise their children into responsible members of society, the widows depend on continued institutional support, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and general well-being.
Ms Mohammed explained that the visit was not only to present their concerns but also to reaffirm their loyalty and thanked the army leadership under Waidi Shaibu for sustaining various welfare programmes for families of deceased personnel.
She specifically commended the Nigerian Army Education Sponsorship Programme, describing it as a vital initiative that has helped ease the burden on widows by providing educational opportunities for their children.
The widows also thanked the army for its continued commitment to ensuring that families of fallen heroes are not abandoned, noting that such support has provided hope and stability despite their loss.
