Fateema Mohammed on Monday emerged the winner of the PDP House of Representatives primary in the Ifako-Ijaiye federal constituency of Lagos.

The primary election was held after an initial disagreement over the delegates’ list among aspirants, which delayed the exercise.

The accreditation of delegates started around 7:30 p.m., and voting commenced immediately.

Announcing the result, Anyanwu Uzochukwu, chairman of the electoral committee for the PDP House of Representatives primary for the Ifako-Ijaiye federal constituency, declared that Ms Mohammed polled 28 out of 33 delegate votes to emerge the winner.

Mr Uzochukwu said other contestants, Taiwo Jayeola, Idera Shodipo and Wasiu Adesola scored two, one and zero votes, respectively. The primary recorded two invalid votes.

The electoral officer disclosed that 33 delegates were accredited for the exercise.

“Having counted these ballots, I am pleased to announce, as the electoral officer, that Mohammed Fateema is the winner. She scored the highest number of votes,” declared Mr Uzochukwu.

In her acceptance speech, Ms Mohammed commended the electoral committee, INEC officials, the security, delegates, party leaders and the faithful for their patience in ensuring that the primary was held.

According to her, it was a double victory for her being the one who also won the May 22 primary that was cancelled before the rerun was announced.

Ms Mohammed, who promised to bring a new face to the representation in the constituency if she emerged the winner at the 2023 general elections, urged other contestants to join hands with the party to ensure victory at the polls.

She urged party members yet to register in the ongoing INEC continuous voter registration to do so before the end of the exercise on June 30.
