South African singer and songwriter Tyla beats Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr to claim the 2024 Best Afrobeats Award at this year’s VMAs.

Tyla received her first nomination at the VMAs and won the category for best Afrobeats with her song ‘Water’ which earned her first Grammy at the 66th Grammy Awards, beating Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Last Heartbreak Song’, Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s ‘Ruin’ featuring Pheelz, Tems’ ‘Love Me Jeje’ to the award in the category.

Tyla said, “The impact that ‘Water’ has had on the world proves that African music can be pop music, too. This is so special but also bittersweet. Because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats.”

The event was held at the UBS Arena in New York.

Taylor Swift led this year’s nominees with 12 nods, of which she won seven and set a new record as the first artist to win in the Video of the Year category five times.

The 2024 VMAs were hosted by Megan Thee Stallion and kicked off with Eminem performing ‘Houdini’ from his 12th studio album, ‘The Death of Slim Shady’ (Coup de Grâce).
