Indian authorities have confirmed that one person survived after an Air India Flight 171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members from the Asian country to London Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom crashed during takeoff.

Multiple reports confirmed the incident occurred in India’s western city of Ahmedabad, with the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was on a flight to London, crashing into a residential building housing intern doctors less than five minutes after takeoff.

According to the BBC, Indian Home Affairs Minister, Amit Shah, met with the only survivor from the crash, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, at the hospital.

Among the passengers on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian.

Management of Air India confirmed the incident shortly after the crash, stating, “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent his condolences to the victims of the ill-fated flight, stating he was in touch with the ministers and authorities in charge of the situation.

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” Mr Modi posted on X.
