The Kano State Government has constituted a committee to regulate the activities of Islamic foundations operating in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, who disclosed this Monday, said the committee was mandated to produce a template on the regulation and operations of the foundations.

He listed the affected foundations as those providing support in the areas of education, water supply, building mosques, orphanages’ welfare and other religious activities.

He said the measure would ensure documentation of such organisations for proper monitoring, evaluation and assessment.

Garba further said the committee was also mandated to establish the legitimacy of such international foundations, examine their profiles, registration certificates, contacts and sources of their funding.

The committee is to be co-chaired by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof Sani Zaharaddeen, and the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr Muhammad Tahar Adam.

Other members of the committee are representatives from Qadiriyya, Izala and Tijjaniyya sects, the police, DSS, immigration service, civil defence and the Nigeria Vigilante Group.

Others are Muslim lawyers’ association, Bureau for Land Management, Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority, ministries of justice, education and health, as well as the emirate councils.
