LONDON, England: Some 240 rescuers worked in shifts for more than two days to help rescue a man who lost his footing and fell deep into one of the UK’s deepest caves, known as the Cave of the Black Spring.

Rescuers from at least eight teams across the country formed a human chain and brought out the 40-year-old man on a stretcher, after being trapped for 54 hours.

“The caver was very unlucky here. He is an experienced caver, a fit caver, and it was a matter of putting his foot in the wrong place,” said Peter Francis, spokesman for the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team.

Emergency services liaison officer Gary Evans said the man, who had a broken jaw and leg, as well as spinal injuries, was doing “remarkably well” on Tuesday, and his injuries have been described as not life-threatening.

The cave system is located in the Brecon Beacons mountain range in south Wales near the former quarrying village of Penwyllt. The cave is 984 feet deep and stretches for more than 30 miles, making it among the deepest and longest cave systems in the UK.
