WASHINGTON D.C.: Reading glasses are now available in liquid form, as a new eye drop, developed by Vuity and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has become available nationwide.
Participants in Vuity’s clinical trial have said that users can expect major results. “It is definitely a life changer,” trial participant Toni Wright told CBS News.
According to Vuity, the drops, the first aging-related eye treatment approved by the FDA, which take effect in just 15 minutes, can improve vision for six to ten hours by helping the eye naturally reduce the size of the pupil, CBS reported.
“I was in denial, because to me that was a sign of growing older, you know, needing to wear glasses,” she told CBS, adding it is convenient for her “to have that option of putting the drops in and being able to go,” said Wright.
The cost for the eye drops is $80 for a 30-day supply.
But doctors told CBS it is unlikely the drops will be covered under most healthcare plans, as they are not considered “medically necessary,” and eye glasses remain a less expensive option.
Minor side effects were noted during the three-month trial, including headaches and red eyes, Vuity officials told CBS. In addition, the drops could also be less effective for those aged 65 and over.
Because the drops are new, it is still not possible to study their long-term effects, and Vuity warns against driving in low-light conditions while using the eye drops.
