NEW DELHI, India: For the first time since introducing its video services in India five years ago, Netflix has cut the prices of its streaming services to compete with Disney and Amazon.

In a blog, Netflix announced that it reduced prices by 60 percent to 199 rupees ($2.62) per month for its basic plan, which enables users to watch on only a single device.

The price of its mobile-only plan will drop one-quarter to 149 rupees, with overall prices of various plans falling 18 to 60 percent.

In its announcement, Netflix said the new prices were the “real Money Heist,” referring to one of its most popular television shows.

Netflix has traditionally priced its products above its competitors in India, such as Disney and Amazon, citing the much higher income of English-speaking households who watched its programs.

Unlike Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, which charges 179 rupees ($2.36) per month, allows users to watch its content on multiple devices under the same account, and offers a less expensive annual payment plan.

Disney + Hotstar, which offers an annual premium plan with access to all its content in 4K for 1,499 Indian rupees ($19.76), makes up less than 40 percent of the total subscriber base of 116 million of Disney+, the company said in an earnings call this year.

With the release of more than 40 new titles, including films featuring top Bollywood actors, stand-up comedians and original series, Netflix said 2021 will be its biggest year in India.
