UNITAMS finalized talks with Sudanese groups to reach settlement to Sudan’s crisis

KHARTOUM, Sudan

The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) said Sunday it is working with regional partners to form a common strategy for Sudan’s political process.

In a statement, UNITAMS said it postponed a press conference scheduled for Sunday “to allow further coordination with regional partners on a common strategy and the design of next phase of a political process for Sudan.”

On February 10, UNITAMS said it finalized talks with different Sudanese groups with a view to reaching a political settlement to the country’s crisis.

Last month, UNITAMS head Volcker Perthes announced the launch of UN-facilitated consultations among Sudan’s political process in an effort to safeguard the country’s democratic transition.

Sudan has been in turmoil since Oct. 25, 2021, when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency, in a move decried by political groups as a “military coup”.

Prior to the military takeover, Sudan was governed by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials tasked with overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023.
