Israeli warplanes have allegedly bombed a series of targets in the Syrian capital of Damascus.
The surprise raid has resulted in the death of four Syrian soldiers and the wounding of 3 others.
The attacks, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“At about 12:41 a.m. on Wednesday, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial act of aggression with bursts of missiles from the direction of Tiberias targeting some sites in the vicinity of Damascus,” a military source told SANA.
‘The Syrian Capital Voice news site reported that the strike targeted two locations near the Damascus International Airport, as well as a site belonging to pro-Iranian forces in the Samarian area of Damascus,’ The Jerusalem Post reported.
‘Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen TV reported that sites near Qudsaya and Jamraya, northwest of Damascus, as well as near the Mezzeh Military Airport, were targeted in the strikes.’
The Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said it notified the Secretary-General of the UN and the President of the UN Security Council on Wednesday that ‘the Israeli occupation army committed an air-missile attack on some points surrounding the capital, Damascus, at 12:41a.m. today, Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, using a number of missiles which were fired from the direction of the occupied Tiberias, claiming the lives of four soldiers, wounding three others and causing some material damages.’
The Ministry said ‘this new cowardly aggression coincided with the continuous attacks perpetrated by the U.S. and Turkish occupation forces on Syrian citizens and Syrian lands in support of terrorist groups which prolong the war in Syria.’
The ministry statement said that ‘the Syrian Arab Republic condemns that blatant aggression and other Turkish and U.S. aggression, and reserves the right to respond by appropriate means approved by international law and the Charter of the United Nations.’
The strikes on Wednesday, the Jerusalem Post said, were the third alleged Israeli airstrikes on Syria in the past month.
Coincidently Wednesday the UN Security Council heard a submission from Iran calling for an end to sanctions on Syria.
“The abolition of the embargo measures against the Syrian people is now more vital than at any other time,” Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, told the Council on Wednesday.
“We renew here our demand to end the looting of Syrian natural resources, especially oil and agricultural crops, by foreign forces, because this criminal act not only violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and the resolutions issued by the Security Council and the Charter of the United Nations, but also leaves a bad impact on the efforts and measures that are being implemented to revive the Syrian economy.”
Takht-Ravanchi condemned ‘the repeated violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria by the Israeli entity.’
“We demand the UN Security Council to hold this entity accountable for any aggressive and malicious measures, and for its blatant threats to use force against the countries of the region, which endangers the security and peace of the region,” the diplomat said.
He told the Council, the illegal presence of foreign forces in parts of the Syrian territory ‘has provided ideal conditions for terrorist activities and must end immediately.’
