After 21 days, Keystone oil pipeline restarted in US

  • Canadian pipeline operator TC Energy Corp announced that it has safely restarted service on its Keystone crude oil pipeline to Cushing, Oklahoma, after a 21-day outage.
  • After spilling 14,000 barrels of oil in rural Kansas, the largest US spill in nine years, the 622,000-barrel-per-day pipeline was shut on December 7.
  • The pipeline has had 12 significant incidents through its lifetime, including major spills in 2017 and 2019, according to the Pipeline Safety Trust, a watchdog group.

MONTREAL, Canada: Canadian pipeline operator TC Energy Corp announced that it has safely restarted service on its Keystone crude oil pipeline to Cushing, Oklahoma, after a 21-day outage.

“The Keystone Pipeline System is now operational to all delivery points,” the company said in a statement, while operating “with additional risk-mitigation measures, including reduced operating pressures.”

After spilling 14,000 barrels of oil in rural Kansas, the largest US spill in nine years, the 622,000-barrel-per-day pipeline was shut on December 7.

The pipeline has had 12 significant incidents through its lifetime, including major spills in 2017 and 2019, according to the Pipeline Safety Trust, a watchdog group.
