KHARTOUM, Sudan
Scores of Sudanese demonstrated in the capital Khartoum on Sunday to protest the normalization of relations with Israel.
On Thursday, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen visited Sudan where he met with army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
According to the CNN, Cohen said that the two countries have finalized the text of a peace agreement that will be signed “later this year.”
Protesters who gathered in central Khartoum waved banners condemning the normalization of ties between Sudan and Israel, according to an Anadolu reporter at the scene.
“Palestine not for sale” and “Khartoum won’t betray Jerusalem” were among the banners waved by demonstrators.
Al-Burhan, the head of Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council, had previously met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in February 2020 in the city of Entebbe in Uganda.
Sudan will be the sixth Arab country to establish relations with Israel.
Egypt signed a peace accord with Israel in 1979, followed by Jordan in 1994. And in 2020, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Morocco also announced deals to normalize relations with Israel.
