Students and teachers were among those killed, injured were rushed to hospital

NAIROBI, Kenya

A tragic road accident in Naivasha, Kenya on Thursday left at least 14 people dead, including students and teachers.

The accident occurred when a 50-seater Pwani University bus collided with a 14-seater minibus on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway in Kenya.

The bus had 30 passengers and was headed to a sports event when it collided with the minibus, police told reporters at the scene.

Rift Valley police chief Tom Odera confirmed the accident, which is believed to have been caused by brake failure.

“Survivors of the crash have been rushed to Naivasha hospital, with some in critical condition, and the death toll could rise,” Odera said.

The bus also collided with other vehicles after it lost control, hitting the minibus before landing in a ditch, Odera said.

The accident comes just a month after a similar incident in the same area, where one person died and dozens of others were injured in a 50-seater bus accident.

Road accidents are a major problem in Kenya, with poorly-maintained vehicles, reckless driving, and inadequate road infrastructure contributing to thousands of deaths every year.
