NAIROBI, Kenya
At least four people were confirmed dead and 11 other emaciated church-goers were rescued from a cult-like church in Kilifi County of Kenya on Friday morning.
Police raided the church after getting a tip from locals that suspicious cult activities were happening at the Good News International Church of Pastor Paul Mackenzie.
A police statement released to the media on Friday said that six rescued people were severely emaciated and in critical condition.
The pastor who owns the church has gone into hiding. He was charged last month with the death of two toddlers who starved to death and is presently free on police bail.
The police report revealed that the four victims, three men and a woman, were all members of the church. The police have not yet released the identities of the deceased.
In recent years, there have been concerns about the rise of cults in Kenya. Some of the newer cults in Kenya have been linked to violent and criminal activities.
