Ilorin, Dec. 11,2020 (NAN) An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Olawale Ahmed, has described social media platform as a tool for tackling human trafficking in the country. Ahmed, who made the assertion in Ilorin on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said social media could help raise awareness about human trafficking.
He said social media would help keep the public aware of any attempt by trafficking agents to lure people travel to abroad as slaves. “Both young and old are now being lured into trafficking acts. They take them abroad to sell their labour where they stylishly turn them to slaves. “The awareness of this evil act is not enough. We need to do more on social media platforms. We need to keep the public and the government aware of this act. “Our promising girls and energetic boys have been taken away and reduced to ordinary slaves all in the name of survival. “The leadership of the country must wake up to save our youths and children from being exploited. Nobody is safe again,” he said.
According to him, most young girls have been turned to prostitutes all for survival. He advocated the need for government to link with the public via social media where information can be easily disseminated on trafficking.
The lawyer also called for human trafficking awareness training where parents, children, young and old people would benefit from. He, however, called on the public, journalists and NGOs to volunteer and support anti-trafficking efforts in their community or working environment.
