Protests triggered by death of citizen in police custody

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania

Internet services were interrupted in Mauritania on Wednesday in the wake of protests in several cities over the death of a citizen in police custody.

According to an Anadolu reporter, mobile internet was disrupted in the capital Nouakchott.

There was no comment yet from the Mauritanian authorities or the country’s telecom provider.

On Tuesday, hundreds demonstrated in the capital and other cities in protest of the death of a citizen in police custody in the Sebkha suburb of Nouakchott. One protester was killed in the demonstrations.

Interior Minister Mohamed Ahmed Lemine, for his part, vowed a “transparent investigation” into the deaths. He said that security forces will forcefully confront any attempt to harm security and stability in the country.
