Attacks come despite cease-fire announced by RSF that was to begin Tuesday

KHARTOUM, Sudan

The Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group targeted two strategic army locations and units in the national capital of Khartoum, witnesses reported Tuesday.

The attacks occurred despite a unilateral two-day cease-fire that was announced by the RSF for the Eid-al Adha Muslim holiday that took effect Tuesday.

Witnesses told Anadolu the army confronted the attacks against the Armored Corps units and the Engineering Corps units.

The army is yet to comment on the attacks.

RSF head Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, announced Monday a cease-fire starting Tuesday. The army, however, did not comment on the initiative.

Sudan has been ravaged by fighting between the army and RSF since April in a conflict that has killed nearly 1,000 civilians and injured 5,000 others, according to local medics.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that the conflict has displaced more than 2.2 million people.

Several cease-fire initiatives were announced. But the warring parties accused each other of violating the agreements.

Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Muslim holidays, marking the culmination of the annual hajj (pilgrimage) in Saudi Arabia.
