  • A number of people have been rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds, at least one is believed to be in critical condition.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – At least eight people have been shot dead by a lone gunman at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, the capital of the U.S. midwestern state of Indiana.

A number of people have been rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds, at least one is believed to be in critical condition.

The suspected gunman, police say, killed himself.

“There is no active threat to the community at this time,” Police Department spokesperson Genae Cook said in a statement.

The mass shooting is understood to have taken place around 11:00pm local time Thursday night at 8951 Mirabel Road, Indianapolis, which houses the FedEx Ground-Plainfield Operation Center. FedEx Chief Executive Officer Frederick Smith has confirmed the eight people who died in the attack were all employees.

“First and foremost, I want to express my deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and co-workers of those team members,” he said Friday.

There is no indication as to what motivated the shooting, however, investigations are currently underway.

“IMPD officers located multiple victims with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) responded and pronounced eight people deceased at the scene. Five victims with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Two victims were treated by medics at the scene and released,” the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement issued on Friday.

“IMPD Homicide detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation.Indiana State Police (ISP) detectives are working with IMPD Homicide detectives in interviewing multiple witnesses. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroners Office (MCCO) will be assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death. The MCCO will release the name of the decedents once proper next-of-kin notification has been made.”

“Our Victims Assistance and Chaplains Office responded to the scene and the Family Unification Center which is located at the Holiday Inn Express 8555 Stansted Dr., Indianapolis Indiana,” the Indianapolis police department statement said.

“This morning, Indianapolis residents are confronted with the horrific news of yet another mass shooting, an act of violence that senselessly claimed the lives of eight of our neighbors,” Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett posted on Twitter Friday morning.

FedEx posted a statement on its website early Friday morning:

“We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis Airport,” the statement said. “Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those affected.”

“We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities,” the FedEx statement added.
