2-day strike has paralyzed commercial activities, with banks, seaports, schools, airports shut down

KANO, Nigeria

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have resolved to stop an ongoing nationwide strike beginning at midnight Wednesday after a meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.

Labor leaders at an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting resolved to take into consideration all promises made by the NSA.

The indefinite strike, which began Tuesday to protest the attack on the head of NLC, has crippled commercial activities across the country.

The President of Trade Union Congress (TUC) Festus Osifo, who led labor leaders to the NSA office, said discussions with federal government officials would be taken to separate organs and leaders would communicate accordingly.

The General Secretary of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employee, Sikiru Waheed, confirmed the suspension of the strike.

“Arising from the joint National Executive Council session of NLC and TUC to evaluate the plea of the Federal Government at a meeting held today at the office of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the meeting resolved that the ongoing national strike is hereby suspended,” he said.

The two-day strike has paralyzed commercial activities, with banks, seaports, schools and airports shut down.
