Israel has acknowledged and thanked the United States and President Joe Biden for standing firmly by Israel’s side at the United Nations on Friday when a demand for a ceasefire was blocked by the U.S. using its veto.
The vote of 13-1, followed a day of outpouring of anger and despair over the two-months bombardment of the Gaza Strip and a ground invasion which have claimed the lives of more than 17,000 people, seventy percent of whom are estimated to be women and children.
“I thank the United States and President Biden for standing firmly by our side, today and showing their leadership and values, Gilad Erdan, Israeli Ambassador to the UN, said on Friday night.
“On this Hanukkah holiday, a little of the light dispelled a lot of the darkness. It is shocking that while Hamas is firing rockets at Israel from population centers in southern Gaza, the UN is busy debating a distorted resolution that will enable Hamas’ terrorists to stay in power in Gaza and does not condemn Hamas or call for the release of the hostages.”
“A ceasefire will be possible only with the return of all the hostages and the destruction of Hamas,” he posted on X.
President Biden did not mention the UN resolution on his X account Friday but posted a Hanukkah message:
“The story of Hanukkah teaches us that even a little bit of light, wherever it is found, can dispel the darkness and illuminate a path forward.” he said.
“From our family to yours, Jill and I wish you and your loved ones a Chanukah Sameach, a Happy Hanukkah!”
Meantime Doctors Without Borders, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) slammed Friday’s vote at the UN Security Council claiming the body was complicit in what it described as the ‘ongoing slaughter’ in Gaza.
“To date, the inaction of the United Nations Security Council and vetoes from member states, particularly the United States, make them complicit in the ongoing slaughter,” the MSF said in a statement released on Friday night. “This inaction has given license to the mass killing of men, women and children.”
“We are devastated by the UN Security Council’s failure to adopt a resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, blocked by a solitary veto from the United States,” the MSF later posted on X. “By vetoing this resolution, the U.S. stands alone in casting its vote against humanity.”
