Action continues at the ongoing 2024 WTT Contender Lagos with the tournament already taking shape as prominent players such as Indian legend Sharath Kamal Achanta, Nigeria’s Omotayo Olajide and Edem Offiong kicked off their campaign.
China dominated the opening day of the tournament on Wednesday, winning all the matches.
But it was not a smooth ride for Chinese players in the morning session of day two on Thursday as some of them were beaten in various events.
Below are the results from day two morning session as Indian and South Korean players stepped up in the session to maintain Asian dominance.
Men’s singles round of 32
Achanta thrashed Ghana’s Godwin Alabi 3-0, Spain’s Miguel Pantoja lost 3-0 to India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, the tough clash between Algeria’s Mehdi Bouloussa and China’s Ning Xiankun ended 3-2 in favour of the latter, Abdulrahaman Abdullahi (Nigeria) lost 3-0 to Luo Jiecheng (China).
Nigeria’s Azeez Solanke lost 3-0 to India’s Manush Utpalbhai Shah, Kang Youde (China) thrashed James Marfo (Ghana) 3-0, Germany’s Ricardo Walther dominated Benin Republic’s Amir Atanda Adou, winning all the three sets while India’s Harmeet Desai beat Nigeria’s Abdulbasit Abdulfatai 3-0.
Women’s doubles round of 16
Indian duo of Mukherjee Ayhika and Mukherjee Sutirtha defeated Chinese duo of Xu Huiyao and Yao Zixuan 3-2, Badawy Farida (Egypt) and Yoo Siwoo (South Korea) thump Nigeria duo of Ayoola Kubirat and Udoaka Hope 3-0.
Ajibike Mojisola and Hussain Halima (both Nigerian) lost 3-1 to Chitale Diya and Ghorpade Yashaswini (both Indian), Indian duo of Akula Sreeja and Kamath Archana Girish thrashed Ghanaian duo of Borquaye Bernice and Kwabi Cynthia 3-0.
Women’s singles round 32
South Korea’s Yoo Siwoo thrashed China’s Sun Sinan 3-0, All-Nigerian tie between Offiong Edem and Fatimo Bello ended 3-2 in favour of the latter, Mojisola Ajibike (Nigeria) lost 3-1 to Aminat Fashola (Nigeria), Portugal’s Jieni Shao defeated Nigeria’s Sukurat Aiyelbegan 3-1
Mixed doubles round of 16
Chinese duo of Fei Junhang and Sun Sinan lost 3-1 to Indian duo of Desai Harmeet and Ghorpade Yashaswini, Indian duo of Shah Manush Utpalbhai and Chitale Diya Parag beat Nigerian duo of Solanke Azeez and Ojomu Ajoke 3-0.
Omotayo Olajide and Edem Offiong defeated Fagbamila Akinwale and Akinyinka Kehinde (both Nigerian) 3-1, South Korean duo of Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin defeated China’s Kang Youde and Yao Zixuan 3-0, another South Korean duo of Kim Woogin and Yoo Siwoo beat Chinese duo of Ning Xiankun and Ding Yijie 3-0.
All-India tie between the duo of Thakkar Manav/Kamath Archana and duo of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran/Akula Sreeja ended 3-1 in favour of the former, Ghanaian duo of Commey Emmanuel and Kwabi Cynthia lost 3-0 to Chinese team up of Luo Jiecheng and Xu Huiyao.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Kuti Matthew and Bello Fatimo thrashed the Ghanaian duo of Antwi Francis and Borquaye Bernice.
