ISTANBUL

Turkish Environment Minister Murat Kurum on Friday spoke via video conference with his Australian counterpart Chris Bowen and the two leaders discussed their respective bids to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) in 2026.

The ministers agreed to hold technical-level talks on the COP31 process, according to a statement from Türkiye’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change.

Kurum emphasized Türkiye’s strategic position as a “critical bridge” between developed and developing nations, citing its unique geographical location, economic structure, and climate diversity.

Underlining that Türkiye is located in the Mediterranean Basin, where the effects of climate change are felt the most, the minister said: “We strongly believe that COP31 will strengthen our country’s successful efforts on climate change.”

He underscored Türkiye’s view of climate change as a “national security issue,” outlining plans for a “Zero Waste” focused COP, proposing a low-emission event in both transportation and the supply chain.

Bowen expressed Australia’s keen interest in hosting COP31, and the parties agreed to discuss it again.
