  • Jamii Telecommunications chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Joshua Chepkwony claimed cheap Starlink internet offers could stifle competition
  • Chepkwony wrote a protest letter to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), asking it to investigate Starlink over alleged predatory pricing

Jamii Telecommunications, which provides Faiba internet, has accused American billionaire Elon Musk of introducing cheap Starlink data offers to lure consumers from other providers.

Why Jamii Telecommunications is protesting

In a protest letter tabled in the High Court, the internet service provider (ISP) wants the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to investigate Starlink over alleged predatory pricing.

Jamii Telecommunications chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Joshua Chepkwony claimed cheap Starlink internet offers could stifle competition.

What is Starlink’s market share?

CA data shows that Starlink, which entered the Kenyan market in July 2023, has already gained a market share of 0.5%.

The regulator noted the sector was expected to keep growing following the rollout of new technologies and services.

What is Starlink’s cheapest data plan?

In June 2024, Starlink announced a standard 50GB plan for Kenyans at KSh 1,300 per month.

A section of Kenyans reached out to the techpreneur via X, his social media platform, urging him to give another offer following an internet outage from broadband providers.

Musk launched a new package dubbed Starlink Mini, which is half the standard plan price.

What to know about Starlink and other ISPs

  • Starlink has been reviewing its pricing to attract Kenyan consumers, offering broadband internet access with speeds up to 200 Mbps.
  • Wi-Fi prices in Kenya vary widely, with packages ranging from KSh 1,500 to over KSh 50,000, depending on the provider and the speed tiers.
  • Safaricom increased the internet speeds of its Wi-Fi packages to enhance its competitiveness in the face of rising competition.
