The House of Representatives committee on renewable energy has announced the postponement of the inaugural National Legislative Summit and Expo on Renewable Energy to May 5 and May 6.

Chairman of the committee, Rep. Afam Ogene, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

The two-day event had earlier been scheduled for Feb. 24 to Feb. 27 at Eko Hotel in Lagos.

Mr Ogene said that the event was rescheduled following consultations between his committee and the Office of the Speaker of the House.

According to him, the summit is aimed at driving sustainable growth in Nigeria’s renewable energy market and development.

The lawmaker said that the event, with the theme: ‘Renew Nigeria: Unlocking Opportunities’, will be hosted by the committee, in conjunction with the office of the speaker.

“The decision is to allow the house to expand the summit’s scope and better accommodate the numerous stakeholders who have expressed interest in participating.

“The concerns of some critical stakeholders regarding the initial February date have been taken into account and the committee regrets any inconveniences caused by change of date to intending participants,” he said.

Mr Ogene said that the event would feature high-level stakeholder engagements, industry assessments and identification of priority actions from the renewable energy provisions contained in the Electricity Act, 2023.

According to him, renewable energy is the future, adding that the government is taking concrete steps to invest in it to promote sustainable energy.

He said that this strategic approach aimed to encourage Nigerians to adopt renewable energy solutions.

Mr Ogene expressed optimism that the summit would go a long way in addressing the country’s electricity supply challenges and strengthening national energy security.

“The development of Nigeria’s renewable energy sector is a top priority for the 10th House of Representatives, led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.

“In a historic manner, the speaker established the committee on renewable energy to spearhead policies, track progress and promote development that attracts investment and sustains renewable energy technology in Nigeria,” he said.

The lawmaker said that the house had taken steps toward promoting sustainability by recently adopting a resolution mandating government ministries, departments, agencies and institutions to transit to renewable energy sources for their power needs.
