KHARTOUM, Sudan

Sudan’s army said on Tuesday that its forces are close to “entirely clearing” the Khartoum State of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“Our forces continue to crush the RSF militia in the south and west of Omdurman and are continuing to clear the Salha area, south of Omdurman, and its surroundings,” military spokesman Nabil Abdullah said in a statement.

“We are continuing our large-scale operation and are close to clearing the entire state of Khartoum,” he added.

There was no immediate comment from the rebel group on the army’s statement.

Since April 2023, the RSF has been battling the army for control of Sudan, resulting in thousands of deaths and creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

More than 20,000 people have been killed and 15 million displaced, according to the UN and local authorities. Research from US scholars, however, puts the death toll at around 130,000.
