NAIROBI

US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos called on Sudan’s warring parties on Tuesday to adhere to a three-month humanitarian truce proposal in the war-torn country.

“We appeal to both sides to accept the three-month humanitarian truce,” Boulos told a joint press conference in Abu Dhabi with Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) president.

On Monday, the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, said his forces and allied groups have agreed to an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that includes a halt to all hostile actions for three months.

The Sudanese government rejected the truce unilaterally declared by the RSF, calling it “a blatant political maneuver” that contradicts the atrocities carried out by the rebel group on the ground.

The US adviser denied accusations of bias made by the chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stressing that Washington is working with both parties to end the war.

He also stated that President Donald Trump considers achieving peace in Sudan a “priority.”

On Sunday, Burhan criticized a proposal presented by the international Quad of the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, saying the plan calls for the dissolution of Sudanese armed forces while keeping the RSF in control.

“If the mediation continues in this direction, we will consider it non-neutral,” Burhan said.

Boulos also condemned atrocities committed by the RSF and army forces in Sudan and called for holding those responsible accountable.

There was no immediate comment from the RSF or the Sudanese army on his remarks.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
