Former U.S. President Barack Obama has once again spotlighted Nigerian music, naming Burna Boy, Olamide, Asake, and Seyi Vibez among his favourite songs of 2025.
Mr Obama unveiled the list on Instagram, keeping up a tradition he began during his White House years of sharing his annual picks across music, books, and films.
The post featured a curated selection of songs spanning Afrobeats, pop, hip-hop, rock and alternative music from artists around the world.
Representing Nigeria on the list are Tatata by Burna Boy featuring Travis Scott, and 99 by Olamide featuring Daecolm, Seyi Vibez, Asake and Young Jonn.
“As 2025 comes to a close, I’m continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House: sharing my annual lists of favourite books, movies, and music. I hope you find something new to enjoy—and please send any recommendations for me to check out!” said Mr Obama.
Nigerian musicians have become regular fixtures on Mr Obama’s annual music lists over the years, reflecting the steady global rise of Afrobeats.
Burna Boy has been featured on previous editions of the former president’s annual music lists, while Olamide also made an earlier appearance as a featured artist.
Asake, who has enjoyed repeated international exposure in recent years, was included on last year’s list, underlining a growing consistency in the recognition of Nigerian acts.
The inclusion comes during another strong year for Nigerian music on the global stage.
Burna Boy headlined major international festivals and arenas in 2025, maintaining his status as one of Africa’s biggest music stars.
lamide continued to influence music, home and abroad, through his collaborations and shows, while Asake sustained his success with international tours.
Seyi Vibez also enjoyed a breakout year beyond Nigeria, with international collaborations and the release of ‘Fuji motto’, his first single in three years.
The 2025 playlist also includes ‘Abracadabra’ by Lady Gaga, ‘Luther’ by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, ‘Nokia’ by Drake, ‘Jump’ by BLACKPINK, ‘Silver Lining’ by Laufey, and ‘Ancient Light’ by I’m With Her.
Obongjayar, a Nigerian-born, London-based musician, also made the list with his song ‘Not in Surrender’.
