LUSAKA, Zambia

Zambia recorded 20 new cholera cases in the past 24 hours on Monday, with the capital Lusaka accounting for 11 of the infections, Health Minister Elijah Muchima said Monday.

Four of the remaining cases were reported in Nakonde, a town bordering Tanzania, three in Choma in Southern Province, and two in Mpulungu on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

No deaths were recorded from the new cases, and the number of districts with active cholera transmission stands at seven, Muchima told reporters.

“Lusaka remains the current driver of the outbreak with widespread but low-level transmission across multiple sub-districts, while Mpulungu continues to experience a second wave of cases,” the minister added.

Muchima also said torrential rains in parts of the country had caused flooding, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. He urged citizens to practice good hygiene, seek early medical care, and adhere to public health guidelines.
