Benjamin Sesko’s late goal rescued Manchester United on Tuesday night as West Ham United held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium.

It was the first time United had dropped points since the return of Michael Carrick as the Old Trafford outfit’s interim manager, as the Red Devils failed to temporarily move into third place in the Premier League.

Luke Shaw had the best chance to put United ahead in the first half as the England international, on time, directed a corner kick by Bruno Fernandes towards the net, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka cleared the ball off the line.

The hosts stunned United five minutes into the second half when Tomas Soucek ran through the visitors’ box to tap home a pass by Jarrod Bowen to put West Ham ahead.

Several minutes later, Casemiro thought he had scored an equaliser for United after heading home Kobbie Mainoo’s cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

United continued to apply pressure on West Ham to restore parity, which paid off in the sixth of the seven minutes added time when Sesko flicked home Bryan Mbeumo’s cross into the net to ensure the Red Devils avoided a defeat.

United remain fourth on the table, with one point ahead of Chelsea, which was forced to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge by Leeds United.

João Pedro gave Chelsea the lead in the 24th minute when the forward calmly slotted home a through pass from Cole Palmer. The England international scored a penalty two minutes from the hour mark to double the lead.

However, Luka Nmecha put one back for the visitors from the penalty spot in the 67th minute before assisting Noah Okafor, who scoredsix minutes later to secure an important point for Leeds United in the battle for survival.

Tuesday games’ results

West Ham United 1 vs 1 Man United

Chelsea 2 vs 2 Leeds United

Tottenham 1 vs 2 Newcastle United

Everton 1 vs 2 Bournemouth
