Officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) searched the house of former Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in Abuja on Thursday, as the former governor remains in the commission’s custody.
Olumuyiwa Adekeye, spokesperson for Mr El-Rufai, confirmed this development in a terse statement circulated on X on Thursday.
“The Aso Drive residence of Malam Nasir @elrufai was today searched by the ICPC,” Mr Adekeye said.
According to Mr Adekeye, Ubong Akpan, Mr El-Rufai’s lawyer, condemned the action “as unlawful, and a clear violation of legal procedures and fundamental rights”.
Earlier on Thursday, Peoples Gazette reported that Mr El-Rufai was arrested by the ICPC on Wednesday night, minutes after his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja.
Mr El-Rufai was arrested by the ICPC outside the EFCC headquarters at about 10:00 p.m. and driven to the ICPC headquarters.
Mr El-Rufai had spent two nights in the EFCC’s custody after appearing before the commission for questioning on Monday, where he was grilled by operatives.
He is being probed by the anti-graft agency over alleged N432 billion money laundering, based on a petition by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
