Massive flooding caused by heavy rainfall on Friday killed at least 23 people in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Kenya Police, in a statement on Saturday posted on X, confirmed the incident and warned citizens to avoid movement in flooded areas.

“The torrential rains have led to significant flooding, unfortunately resulting in 23 fatalities so far, the destruction of property, road closures, and the displacement of residents,” the police said.

Kenya military and other security forces have commenced rescue efforts to help those trapped in their cars and houses reach safety.

About 30 people have reportedly been rescued from the flood, according to authorities.

In a follow-up “Heavy Rains Alert,” police warned citizens to avoid flooded areas for their safety.

“As heavy rains continue across the country, the Kenya Police Service urges the public to remain cautious. Avoid flooded roads, stay away from fast-flowing rivers and drainage channels, and drive carefully due to poor visibility,” police said.

It added, “Our officers are on the ground working with emergency teams to support communities and keep everyone safe. Report dangerous situations to the nearest police station or emergency services.”

The police posted photos and videos of flood-ravaged areas, showing many cars trapped in the flood and other properties damaged.

The rains and flooding disrupted commercial activities, causing the cancellation of flights bound for Nairobi airport.
