The Lagos government has commenced an investigation into the collapse of a four-storey building that housed residential occupants and a private school on Adu Street, in Aguda, Ogba, on Monday.

Injured pupils received medical treatment at a hospital, the government said.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency, in a statement on Tuesday, confirmed that all the students and staff of Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, as well as other occupants, were evacuated from the building before it collapsed.

Mr Adu said, “The building, which accommodated both residential occupants and a private school, collapsed on Monday, causing concern within the neighbourhood.

“No casualties were recorded as students, staff, and other occupants had exited the building before the incident occurred. However, a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collapse.”

According to Mr Adu, officials of the LASBCA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other responders went to the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety, and preliminary observations revealed that building activities were underway on the property when it collapsed.

As part of precautionary measures, occupants of nearby buildings were advised to temporarily vacate their premises while safety assessments are conducted on surrounding structures to determine their condition and structural stability, Mr Adu explained.
