The Plateau chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it has successfully conducted primaries in 15 out of the 17 local government areas of the state.

The primaries are for local elections slated for September 9.

Plateau ADC chairperson, Hanatu Gagara, told journalists that primaries were conducted peacefully across the local governments, except for Mikang and Langtang South.

Ms Gagara said that in the rest of the local governments, ADC has candidates contesting for councillorship and chairmanship seats.

“What really happened was that the two local governments came late to obtain the forms, and by then we couldn’t sell the forms to them anymore because the time had already elapsed.

“Now that the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has increased the period for the primaries based on the new electoral act, their issue will be looked into.

“We haven’t started the process yet because I just received the letter this afternoon from PLASIEC regarding what happened,” she said.

The chairperson boasted that the party is fully prepared for the election.

According to her, ADC, which is the main opposition party in Plateau, has nominated competent personalities to slug it out with the ruling party.

“Well, we have great chances of winning the elections. As you can see, even with the defections from various parties, many people are coming in.

“That alone shows that there is a great possibility and strong prospect of winning,” she stated.

She said that members of the party were fully mobilised to participate in all the electoral processes leading to the elections.

Meanwhile, Ms Gagara said the party’s e-registration was ongoing and urged members to validate their membership.

“Our members are enthusiastic, especially now that they know the congresses are coming up.

“A lot of people are participating, and we have stationed people in various local governments who are continuing with the registration.”

The chairperson urged old and intending members to validate their membership by visiting various wards and local governments.
