Social media company X has announced a new policy to limit users in Nigeria and other countries from monetising foreign engagement with content about geopolitical events outside their home countries, starting Thursday.
The platform’s head of product, Nikita Bier, disclosed this in an X post on Wednesday, stating that the billionaire Elon Musk-owned company will start giving more weight to impressions generated by creators from their home countries.
Mr Bier argued that the new policy is aimed at encouraging X users to publish content that resonates with people in the same country and neighbouring regions.
He specifically mentioned that there would be fewer Ivanka Trump Fan accounts based in Nigeria, with more Nigerians sharing their thoughts about Nigerian issues instead.
“Starting Thursday, we’ll be updating our revenue sharing incentives to better reward the content we want on X: We will be giving more weight to impressions from your home region—to encourage content that resonates with people in your country, in neighbouring countries and people who speak your language,” Mr Bier said.
He added, “While we appreciate everyone’s opinion on American politics, we hope this will disincentivise gaming the attention of U.S. or Japanese accounts and instead, drive diverse conversations on the platform. We invite creators to start building an audience locally. X will be a much richer community when there’s relevant posts for people in all parts of the world.”
The latest move came three weeks afterX implemented a policy targeting users on the platform with suspension from revenue sharing for posting AI-manipulated videos during wartime without labels amid the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
