The police command in Ondo State has arrested 24 suspected cultists in Ile-Oluji, Ile-Oluji/ Okeigbo Local Government Area of the state during initiation ceremony of new members.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Akure.
Mr Jimoh said that the suspects who were members of the Aiye confraternity were arrested on Sunday by the operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad while acting on credible intelligence
He said that the suspects, all males, came from different parts of the state and beyond for initiation rites in the bush in Ile-Oluji.
“The operation was executed professionally and without incident, thereby preventing what could have posed a serious threat to public peace and security in the area.
“Items recovered from the suspects during the operation include two Aiye confraternity crested caps, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and several mobile phones believed to be relevant to ongoing investigations,” he said.
Mr Jimoh reiterated the command’s zero tolerance to cultism and all forms of violent crimes in the state.
He stated, “The command assures members of the public that investigation into the matter is ongoing with a view to uncovering the full scope of the network and bringing all culpable persons to justice.
“Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with timely and credible information as the command intensifies efforts to ensure lasting peace and security throughout Ondo State.”
