The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has defended the state government’s environmental enforcement efforts amid criticism over indiscriminate waste disposal.

Mr Wahab made the remarks on his X account while responding to a social media user who alleged that the government was not doing enough to tackle environmental violations.

The commissioner said the criticism overlooked ongoing efforts by the state to apprehend and sanction individuals involved in indiscriminate waste disposal.

“Beyond selectively reading tweets that align with your perspective, it is evident that you may not have been following the consistent efforts of the state government,” he wrote.

According to him, authorities have consistently apprehended and sanctioned offenders found violating environmental laws in different parts of the state.

Mr Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring compliance with proper waste disposal practices.

“The government remains committed to enforcing environmental laws and has continued to carry out regular enforcement operations against offenders across the state,” he stated.

The commissioner’s remarks come amid public concerns over waste management challenges and environmental sanitation in some Lagos communities.

The state government has repeatedly emphasised that effective enforcement and public cooperation are essential to maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
