Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is set for another term as his Prosperity Party won a landslide victory in the general elections held on June 1.

Mr Abiy’s party won 438 seats, almost 90 per cent of the 501 contested seats, way over the required 274 to secure a majority in the parliament.

This election outcome would result in Mr Abiy retaining his seat as Prime Minister. Mr Abiy, 49, who first came to power  in 2018, would be sworn in for another term in early October.

Over 50 million people registered to vote in the election. However, the election was not held in some parts of the country due to the crisis rocking the country.

Ethiopia’s National Election Board (NEBE) cited “unfavourable conditions” of the 2020 to 2022 civil war as a reason for not holding elections in the northern Tigray region.
