The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said that the recurring abduction of schoolchildren remains a grave national concern that demands urgent and decisive action.

Mr Obi said this on Saturday, expressing profound relief at the safe rescue of abducted Oyo schoolchildren and teachers on Friday.

“No child should be subjected to the trauma of kidnapping, and I am urging government at all levels to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and make the protection of lives and property its foremost responsibility,” Mr Obi said in a post on X.

He emphasised that every Nigerian child deserved to receive an education in an atmosphere of safety rather than fear.

The politician called for sustained efforts to build a country where children could pursue their education free from threats of violence and abduction.

Mr Obi, however, lauded security personnel and others who worked behind the scenes to secure the safe release of the victims.

He said, “I am greatly relieved and delighted to learn of the safe rescue of the schoolchildren who were kidnapped.

“I sincerely thank all those whose tireless efforts made their freedom possible, especially the security personnel and everyone who worked behind the scenes.”

He described the development as a heartening reminder that collective commitment and effective action could produce positive outcomes.
