The president of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, has resigned from his position citing ill health.
According to the AFP, Mr Shahabuddin announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, the speaker of parliament, on Friday.
“Due to worsening physical and mental incapacity… it is no longer possible for me to properly discharge the responsibilities of an important constitutional office such as the presidency,” the letter read.
Mr Shahabuddin will continue to discharge the duties of the president until a new leader is elected within 90 days.
The 76-year-old president was elected to the ceremonial position by the parliament in 2023.
After the former minister Hasina Wazed was ousted from office during the 2024 uprising, Mr Shahabuddin remained in office despite major sweeping changes that saw many of his allies out of power.
He continued to serve when an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took power, and even after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won the general election in February.
