Liverpool avoided their first top-flight defeat to Newcastle United in a dramatic 2-2 draw on Sunday at St James’ Park, courtesy of a late goal from Dominic Szoboszlai.

Anthony Elanga took the lead for the Magpies in just five minutes into the Premier League game off a brilliant assist from Willam Osula.

Liverpool equalised 1-1 after halftime as Cody Gakpo was on target after receiving a delivered pass from his Dutch teammate Ryan Gravenberch.

The hosts regained the lead just two minutes after Gakpo’s equaliser, making it 2-1, as Joseph Willock fired an incredible curled effort from a smooth pass by Yoane Wissa to restore the lead.

Andoni Iraola’s side were saved with a crucial opportunity as a challenge from Lewis Hall, which took Victor Munoz down in the 18-yard area, gave the Reds a penalty advantage in added time.

The opportunity allowed Szoboszlai to equalise the game at 2-2, snatching a late point for his side.

The result extended Iroala’s Premier League unbeaten streak to 19 games as the Reds avoided defeat in their league opener.

Newcastle turn their focus to their EFL Cup fixture against West Brom on Wednesday, while Liverpool host Nottingham Forest on Saturday at Anfield.

Elsewhere in Sunday’s EPL fixtures, Manchester City sealed a late dramatic comeback after going a goal down in the first half to Marcus Tavernier, who scored from a great cross from Evanilson.

After the break, Enzo Maresca introduced Rayan Cherki, who went on to produce two assists to Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol to pick up the late 2-1 comeback victory.

At the Amex Stadium, Aston suffered a poor start to their campaign in a 4-0 loss to Brighton, as Unai Emery’s men suffered a huge deficit as Joao Gomes was sent off following a challenge on Georginio Rutter.
