At least 21 people were killed and four others seriously injured in an accident involving multiple vehicles in South Africa’s Western Cape province, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Monday.
The agency said the crash took place on Sunday night at 11.30 pm local time (0930 GMT) on the N1 highway, involving two minibus vehicles and a station wagon.
The collision on N1 between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamku led to the closure of the highway in both directions, with motorists urged to take alternative routes, expect delays and exercise extreme caution.
South Africans depend on minibus taxis as their main mode of transport. The 14-seat taxis transport millions of people to work, schools, provinces, towns, and even across the borders daily.
