The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian author and poet, Anne Carson.
Ingrid Carlberg, the academy’s secretary-general, announced the winner of the prestigious Nobel Prize on Thursday.
Ms Carson was awarded “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary Literature”.
Ms Carlberg said she phoned Ms Carson, who is currently in Iceland “where she is listening to the wind”, adding that she “was very taken by surprise” when she heard the news.
Anne Carson, 76, attended the University of Toronto and has taught comparative literature and creative writing in institutions across Canada and the U.S. She has written over 20 books.
Hungarian author Làszló Krasznahorkai won the Nobel Prize in Literature last year.
