ABUJA, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — Nine people were killed by unidentified gunmen in a village in Nigeria’s restive northwestern state of Kaduna over the weekend, a local official said on Monday.

The attack on Saturday took place in Ungwan Dooh, a village in the state’s Zangon Kataf area, Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security and home affairs in Kaduna, said in a statement.

He said the military responded to distress calls by locals and rushed to the area, and that the attackers fled when they saw the advancing troops.

The death toll might go up as an ongoing search and rescue operation could lead to the discovery of more victims, Aruwan said.

There have been a series of gunmen attacks in Nigeria in recent months, leading to deaths and kidnappings.
