GENEVA

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday that African leadership is “strong” across many facets of global health.

The WHO is “committed to fostering the next generation of African global health leaders and to supporting the continent’s science ecosystem,” Tedros said in a video message on X.

African leaders played a role in several aspects, including scientific advancements during the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, and ongoing negotiations to reform global health systems, he said.

The WHO is “proud to partner with African institutions,” such as the African Medicines Agency and the mRNA Technology Transfer platform, as well as the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the WHO chief.

Tedros called for collaboration to boost international and domestic investment in scientific institutions, foster regional partnerships, and turn research into effective policies and practices.

“Together, we can harness the power of science, leadership, and cooperation for a healthier, safer, and more peaceful Africa and world,” he underlined.
