ARLINGTON, Virginia: The Arlington County Board has unanimously approved Amazon’s plans to build a helix-shaped tower, which will be the centerpiece of its second headquarters in northern Virginia.

As part of the second phase of its redevelopment, in February 2021 Amazon announced plans for the eye-catching, 350-foot tower, which is expected to welcome more than 25,000 workers when completed.

The helix has a spiral design that features a walkable ramp wrapping around the building, with trees and greenery planted to resemble a mountain hiking trail.

According to Amazon, the building is designed to help workers connect to nature, and the outdoor mountain climb will be open to the public on weekends.

Since the company applied for permission to build the tower, Arlington County has conducted its review process, which included many public hearings, and earlier this month the county planning commission voted 9-0 to approve the proposal.

Last week, the County Board voted 5-0 to approve the plans, which also includes ground level retail, park space and a community high school.

Amazon said it hopes to complete the building in 2025.
