ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Pakistan categorically denied on Thursday that a U.S. drone strike in Kabul that killed al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri used Pakistani airspace.

“I would refer you to the statement we issued (earlier) on this incident, which is our stated position.”

“There is no evidence that this action was carried out using Pakistani airspace, so this is something I can add to that,” said the Foreign Office spokesman during the weekly media briefing.

On August 2, the spokesman issued a vague statement about the U.S. drone strike, saying that Pakistan is committed to combating terrorism following international law and relevant U.N. resolutions.

In the statement, there was no reference to Ayman al-Zawahiri, and he did not mention Pakistan’s airspace not being used.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, some U.S. media outlets reported that the American drone that killed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri in Kabul was possibly launched from a Kyrgyz airbase.

According to reports, the attack was launched from Ganci Airbase, a U.S. transit facility in Manas, northern Kyrgyzstan.
